Recently, I worked on a real-world problem where I needed to extract a large dataset (~80,000 records) from a web application.

At first, it looked like a straightforward web scraping task. But as I went deeper, I realized this wasn’t just about writing code — it was about understanding how modern web systems are designed to prevent automation.

This blog is a summary of what I tried, what failed, and what I learned.

🧩 The Problem

The goal was simple:

Extract all available records (~80K) from a web platform and automate the process.

The platform had:

Pagination

A table view

A “download” option (limited to 100 rows)

At first glance, it looked like a perfect candidate for scraping.

🛠️ Approach 1: BeautifulSoup (HTML Parsing)

I started with the basics:

Fetching HTML using requests

Parsing using BeautifulSoup

Extracting rows using
and

❌ Problem

The data was not fully present in the HTML.

The site was built using a modern frontend framework (React), and:

Only a small portion of data was visible

The rest was dynamically loaded

👉 Lesson:

HTML ≠ Data source in modern applications

🌐 Approach 2: Selenium (Browser Automation)

Next, I switched to Selenium:

Opened the browser

Loaded the page

Tried scrolling and pagination

Extracted visible rows

❌ Problem

Only ~70–100 rows were accessible at a time.

Reason:

The table was virtualized

Only visible rows were rendered in DOM

👉 Lesson:

UI rendering is optimized, not meant for full data extraction

🔍 Approach 3: API Discovery (DevTools)

Then I moved to DevTools:

Opened Network → Fetch/XHR

Identified backend API calls

Found the endpoint returning structured JSON

This looked promising.

⚡ Approach 4: Direct API Extraction

I converted the API request into Python (requests) and tried to fetch data page by page.

❌ Problem

Instead of JSON, I received:

HTML pages

CAPTCHA challenges

Session validation blocks

Even after solving CAPTCHA in browser:

Requests from Python were still blocked

👉 Lesson:

Backend APIs can be protected with session + anti-bot validation

🚧 The Real Challenge: Anti-Bot Protection

At this stage, it became clear that the system had:

CAPTCHA enforcement

Session-based validation

Bot detection mechanisms

This meant:

Automated bulk extraction was being actively blocked

The server was designed to prevent scraping

🧠 Key Realization

At this point, the problem changed from:

“How do I scrape all data?”

to

“What is the most reliable way to get the required data?”

⚖️ Engineering Decision

Instead of forcing automation, I evaluated alternatives.

The platform already provided:

Built-in download option

Pagination

Structured data access (limited per request)

So the better approach was:

Use the platform’s own download mechanism for incremental data collection

💡 Final Solution

For the actual requirement (weekly data collection):

Use built-in download (100 rows per page)

Collect only new records periodically

Avoid full bulk scraping

📚 What I Learned

This project taught me more than just scraping:

🔹 Technical

Difference between static and dynamic content

API-based data loading

DevTools debugging (XHR, headers, payloads)

Pagination strategies

🔹 Real-world constraints

CAPTCHA cannot be bypassed reliably

Anti-bot mechanisms exist at server level

Not all problems are solvable purely with code

🔹 Engineering mindset

Choose practical solutions over complex ones

Understand system limitations

Think beyond “just coding”

🏁 Conclusion

Web scraping is often taught as:

“Send request → parse HTML → extract data”

But in real-world systems, it’s much more complex.

Sometimes, the best solution is not:

writing more code

but

choosing the right approach

💬 Final Thought

“I didn’t just learn how to scrape data —

I learned why some systems are designed not to be scraped.”

“Open to discussions on data engineering, automation, and real-world scraping challenges.”
